The European AI Office is the central body responsible for overseeing and coordinating the implementation of the AI Act at the European Union level. It plays a key role in the implementation, monitoring, and interpretation of the rules related to artificial intelligence.

📌 Legal basis: The AI Act establishes the creation of this Office to ensure consistent enforcement of the regulation across the Member States.


Roles and missions of the European AI Office:

🔹 Coordination of national authorities It ensures that different national supervisory authorities uniformly enforce the rules of the AI Act.

🔹 Interpretation of rules and guidelines The Office publishes technical guidelines and interpretations to assist businesses, authorities, and developers in complying with the requirements of the regulation.

🔹 Monitoring technological developments and risks It monitors the evolution of AI technologies and identifies new risks, especially regarding algorithmic bias, discrimination, and infringement of fundamental rights.

🔹 Supervision of high-risk AI and prohibited AI It assists in overseeing systems classified as 'high risk' and ensures the effective prohibition of prohibited AIs (social scoring, illegal facial recognition, manipulative AI, etc.).

🔹 International cooperation The Office represents the EU in international discussions on AI governance and regulation of emerging technologies.

🔹 Sanctions and corrective actions While the enforcement of sanctions falls within the responsibilities of national authorities, the Office can recommend corrective measures and fines in cases of serious violations of the AI Act.
